Junk removal service opens in Fresno

Fresno is now in the realm of Junk King, a junk removal service that prides itself on eco-friendly habits, good customer service and competitive pricing. The central San Joaquin Valley’s franchise was opened by Clovis resident Wes Burgess, who is also the co-founder of We Be Sober, a service that delivers cars and their drivers home to avoid the dangers of drinking and driving. “I was intrigued by it,” Burgess said of the Junk King company. “Being able to clean up the city and give back to AMVETS and Salvation Army, that’s what I’m passionate about.” He said the goal is to keep junk out of landfills by trying to recycle, donate or reuse what the company picks up. Pricing is determined based on how much of the truck the pick-up fills.

Food is ruling retail real estate, and food trucks are moving in

For the first time nearly two decades, restaurant sales surpassed supermarket sales last year. The turnaround is now showing up in retail real estate, as landlords seek to not only profit from the new normal, but reinvent the now-suffering retail mall. E-commerce may be driving consumers away from shopping centers, but food is pulling them back in.

Low-cost Cedar Heights apartments open in southeast Fresno

Tucked in a southeast Fresno neighborhood dotted with old apartment complexes is a new, modern 14-unit affordable multifamily community from the Fresno Housing Authority and development partner Terance Frazier. Cedar Heights is located on a narrow but deep acre of land on Hamilton Avenue, south of the Fresno Fairgrounds and next to the authority’s renovated Cedar Courts development. The two-story buildings, painted white and gray, are flanked on one side by young palm trees and sit close to a fence separating it from privately owned apartments to the east. The new development is a few blocks from the problem-laced Hayston Avenue apartment complex featured in The Fresno Bee’s “Living in Misery” report. “The housing authority is showing landlords that there is a thoughtful way to build affordable housing that’s well designed and well maintained and that low-income families who live here deserve respect and dignity,” said Preston Prince, the authority’s executive director. “We’re hoping to be setting a tone and setting a direction for this community,” he said. The housing authority and community leaders on Tuesday celebrated the grand opening of the apartments with a ribbon cutting. Prince and Fresno City Council Member Sal Quintero said they hope the project will influence neighboring property owners to renovate or take better care of their properties.

A Minimalist Manifesto: How To Simplify Your Style at Home

Sometimes, our homes can overwhelm us. What should be a place of retreat and comfort becomes bloated with items not needed, styles experimented with and abandoned, and projects started but never completed. While a good Spring Clean (whenever it happens) is always welcome, sometimes you want to go even further than that and streamline your style, too. Read on for our Minimalist Manifesto, and for ideas on how to simplify your home.

After years of drought, boat racing event comes back to Huntington Lake

FRESNO, Calif. -- The annual High Sierra Regatta at Huntington Lake is making a comeback after years of canceled events. In recent years, the drought and low water conditions on the lake hasn't allowed for boat racing. This year there was enough snowfall in the Sierras to make it happen. Several sailboats were out on the water along with plenty of fans out on the shore to watch. There are five races spread out over the weekend. The event is put on by the Fresno Yacht Club.

Foreign buyers flood US real estate, but buy cheaper homes

The appetite for U.S. real estate continues to flourish, but international buyers are shifting their sights from luxury to less-pricey properties. This may be due to overall higher home prices, along with a stronger U.S. dollar, which both cost foreign buyers more at the negotiating table. There are also fewer nonresident foreigners investing in the market.

Water officials say Fresno violated law in failing to report city water issues

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The city of Fresno appears to have violated state law by not reporting water quality problems in northeast Fresno. The problems with rusty water first surfaced in 2004, but the city failed to notify the state's water quality agency of the problem until this year. Because of the rusty water, the city started handing out bottled water to half a dozen homes in 2004. Now, the problem appears to have spread to hundreds of homes, leading to expensive repairs.

Thanks, Brexit! Why UK vote is likely to boost US home sales

The net effect will depend on location and price point, but overall, the Brexit will likely result in continuing growth in home sales with somewhat slower growth in home prices. The impact will benefit well-qualified buyers the most, and it will be a boon for sellers in affordable markets and price points.
